Swinburne students and alumni are making their mark at the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. Meet the seven Swinburne athletes who are taking on the world. 

2024 Olympics (26 July – 11 August 2024)

Amanda Bateman

Amanda Bateman is a Swinburne Bachelor of Arts student who won the B Final Rowing Double Schulls in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with Tara Rigney for an overall seventh place finish.

Bateman is a national champion and has represented Australia at underage and senior world championships.

She has been selected in rowing and placed seventh in Women’s Double Scull with Harriet Hudson. 

Tyson Bull

Tyson Bull graduated from Swinburne’s Master of Physiotherapy in 2023 and has been selected to compete in Gymnastics. 

Born and raised in Melbourne, Bull was a student-athlete at the University of Illinois from 2014-2018. He made history on his Olympic debut in Tokyo as he became the first Australian male gymnast to qualify for an Olympic Apparatus Final.

Stephanie Catley

A Bachelor of Education (Primary) student, Stephanie Catley has been selected as part of Australia’s Matildas Football team, which placed fourth in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. 

Catley made her senior team debut with the Matildas in 2012 and has since been the captain of Melbourne Victory, Melbourne City and the vice-captain of the Matildas for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Jessica Fox

Jessica Fox graduated from Swinburne’s Bachelor of Social Science in 2017 and is competing in the canoe and kayak slalom events. She was one of Australia's flagbearers alongside Eddie Ockenden for the Paris Olympics opening ceremony and subsequently brought home gold in the Woman's Kayak Singles and Canoe Singles. 

Born in France and raised in New South Wales, Fox made her Olympic debut at London 2012 and continued to compete in subsequent Olympic events. Widely considered the greatest individual paddler of all time, Fox’s impressive list of accolades includes 22 World Championship medals, including 10 world titles, four team gold and 11 overall individual World Cup titles.

Brianna Throssell OAM

Brianna Throssell OAM graduated from Swinburne in 2023 and has been selected for the Swimming team.

After making her Olympic debut in Rio 2016, Throssell has continued to shoot for the stars, earning multiple medals and accolades on the world stage. In 2022, Throssell was awarded an Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours for her service to sport. 

She won gold in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay alongside Ariarne Titmus, Molly O’Callaghan, Lani Pallister. 

2024 Paralympics (28 August – 8 September) 

Jack Howell 

Jack Howell graduated from the Dual Diploma of Sport, Management and Leadership at Richmond Institute and Swinburne in 2023 and will be competing in the Paralympics Triathlon.  

After being classified in the PTS5 category for triathlon in 2022, he began competing internationally and won five medals for Australia in just 12 months of racing.

Tim Logan

Swinburne student Tim Logan is competing in the paralympic T12/13 category in Athletics as a guide runner for Jaryd Clifford, who is a vision impaired athlete. They are in the highest category of athlete with the Australian Institute of Sport, meaning they are considered a medal-winning chance at the Games.
