What is a certificate?
A certificate is a vocational or TAFE qualification that gives you hands-on, practical skills. Certificates can help you take the next step in your career or embrace a change in direction. It takes between six months to two years to complete a certificate.
Swinburne offers TAFE certificates, as well as professional development certificates through Swinburne Edge. Swinburne Edge offers industry-leading short courses and qualifications for professionals looking to expand their career.
What is the difference between a TAFE certificate and a TAFE diploma?
A diploma is a step above a certificate in qualification levels. For example, a Certificate III or IV could be a pathway into a diploma. The main differences between studying at a certificate and diploma level are the depth of study and opportunities for further study.
What is the difference between a TAFE certificate and a university certificate?
A TAFE certificate teaches job-ready skills – from entry-level through to apprenticeships and traineeships. On the other hand, university certificates are assessed, credited units lifted from Swinburne’s university-level degrees. You can use a university certificate to upskill, or taste-test units from a Swinburne degree before you commit.
Certificates I and II
Certificate I and II courses give you the basic training and skills in a specific industry with one goal in mind — to get you started in the workplace. You can use a Certificate I or II to build your resume and stand out from the crowd, or as a pathway into an apprenticeship. Many Certificate I and II courses are also pre-apprenticeships.
Certificates III and IV
Certificates III and IV can be apprenticeships, traineeships or simply courses that prepare you for other jobs requiring more than basic skills and knowledge. Swinburne Edge offers cutting-edge Certificate IV qualifications for professional development. Explore areas like leadership and management, work health and safety, and more.
