Is graduation the same for everyone?

Graduation is different depending on which pathway you take. Select either the Higher Education and VE tab below for more information about undergraduate, postgraduate, UniLink and vocational education (Certificate IV and above) or select the OUA students tab for Open Universities Australia graduation details.

Higher Education (undergraduate, postgraduate and UniLink) and Vocational Education (Certificate IV and above) students

If you’ve completed your course, or you’re likely to complete your course soon, your award must be conferred before you can receive a graduation ceremony invite.

Once your award has been conferred, you will receive an email from Swinburne around four weeks before the upcoming round of graduation ceremonies, to confirm your attendance.

When you receive this email, sign into My graduation and modify your planned attendance to one of the following:

  • Ceremony (to attend a graduation ceremony)

  • Postpone (to defer to the next round of graduation ceremonies. You can only postpone to a later ceremony once)

  • Mail (to receive your paper testamur in the post – postage fees apply)

  • Collect (to collect your paper testamur at Library and studentHQ at Hawthorn campus at no cost)

Follow these steps to prepare for your graduation ceremony.

Early exit or intermediate qualifications

If you would like to get graduation documents for the lower level qualification you have completed as part of a higher qualification, complete the Graduation application form.

For example, you may wish to get a testamur for the Graduate Diploma that you have completed as part of a Masters qualification.

Need to change your name, award details or graduation option before you graduate?

If you're currently enrolled in a master or double degree and wish to graduate with a different award/course, please follow the link below to find out what you need to do before you graduate.

Are you waiting on your results?

If you’ve almost finished your course, you may receive an email from Swinburne Graduations before your results are released.

Once your award is conferred and you are eligible to graduate, we will contact you with a graduation ceremony invitation.

Please note: if your course finishes later in the year and you are eligible for a December graduation ceremony, your invitation will be fast-tracked once your results are released.

We encourage you to confirm your graduation option (and pay your graduation fee if you wish to attend your ceremony) by the due date so that you don't have to wait until the next round of graduation ceremonies if your results show that you are eligible to graduate.

Have you already received your results?

Once your results are released, you can be refunded the graduation fee if your results show that you are not eligible to graduate.

If you are eligible to graduate, you must wait for your award to be conferred before you can attend a ceremony. Your conferral may take around 2-4 weeks to process.

Haven’t heard from us?

If you haven’t received an email from Swinburne Graduations three weeks before the upcoming graduation ceremonies, contact Library and studentHQ

If your course code and title appear as one of the following:

  • NN-OUASUB Open Learning Australia Single Subject
  • XU-UGUNIT2 Cross institutional undergraduate Lilydale
  • XU-UGUNIT3 Cross institutional undergraduate OUA

You need to apply for degree admission as soon as possible. You can apply as soon as you've passed a minimum of three undergraduate units or equivalent.

Open Universities Australia (OUA) students

If you're an OUA student enrolled in a Swinburne course, you will first need to let us know you’re about to finish your course by submitting this Graduation application form.

You’ll then need to sign into My graduation and modify your planned attendance to one of the following:

  • Ceremony – to attend a graduation ceremony
  • Postpone – to defer to the next round of graduation ceremonies (you can only postpone to attend a later ceremony once).
  • Mail – to receive your paper testamur in the post. Postage fees apply.
  • Collect – to collect your paper testamur at Library and studentHQ (Hawthorn) at no cost.

If you're an undergraduate OUA student, you should confirm your degree admission status prior to applying to graduate. Check your course code and title by logging in to My Enrolment with your SIMS username and password.

Ceremony dates

Swinburne will automatically allocate you a ceremony date when you’re eligible to graduate.

This date will be in the email that student communications sends you, typically at least four weeks before your graduation ceremony. Check this email to confirm your individual date.

The results release date of your final unit will influence your graduation ceremony date.

The exception is December graduation ceremonies. These are held the week following result release, so students can graduate before the end of the year.

If you’ve completed your last unit too close to the next graduation ceremony, you’ll automatically be allocated the next ceremony after that.

Want to change your ceremony date?

You can change the ceremony date you’ve been offered if it doesn’t suit you:

  • log in to My Graduation

  • click the 'Modify' button

  • select ‘Postpone’ from the drop-down options. You can defer to the next round of graduation ceremonies or add a text note to nominate your preferred date

  • Note: You’ll only be able to postpone your ceremony once

  • click the 'Save' button to submit.
