Swinburne shines in ARWU Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2023
Swinburne’s subjects have ranked in the top 50 worldwide, demonstrating research impact on a global scale.

Swinburne University of Technology has achieved strong results in the latest Shanghai Ranking, the ARWU Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2023.
This year, two Swinburne subjects ranked in the top 50 worldwide.
Automation and Control was a standout performer at rank 36, positioning Swinburne at number two in Australia for the subject, and up nine places from last year.
Also in the top 50 was Business Administration, which ranked 44. The subject rose an outstanding 350 places from the 301-400 band last year.
Hospitality and Tourism Management ranked closely behind, in the 51-75 bracket, from the top 150 last year.
Swinburne's Professor Karen Hapgood, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, expressed her appreciation to the academics and educators contributing to this year's strong results.
"Swinburne’s consistent success in the ARWU subject rankings demonstrates the impact our researchers and research have on a global scale.
"The significant improvement by subjects like Business Administration shows how our commitment to undertaking quality and impactful research across all disciplines is beginning to really pay off,” Professor Hapgood said.
“Congratulations to everyone involved in this exceptional result.”
Newly ranked subjects soar into top 200
Of the 23 Swinburne subjects ranked, nine subjects improved their ranking, with some leaping several bands since last year.
Three subjects were ranked for the first time this year, debuting in the top 150 (Instruments Science and Technology) and the top 200 (Chemical Engineering, and Energy Science and Engineering).
Automation and Control 36 (up from 42)
Business Administration 44 (up from 301-400)
Hospitality and Tourism Management 51-75 (up from 101-150)
Civil Engineering 76-100
Computer Science and Engineering 76-100
Mechanical Engineering 101-150 (up from 201-300)
Instruments Science and Technology 101-150 (ranked for the first time)
Electrical and Electronic Engineering 101-150
Telecommunication Engineering 101-150

Transportation Science & Technology 151-200
Nanoscience and Nanotechnology 151-200 (up from 201-300)

The ARWU Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2023 ranks more than 1,900 universities globally in 55 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences.
The ranking methodology focuses on research outputs, research influence, international collaboration, research quality, and international academic awards.
Swinburne’s latest subject rankings success follows its recent climb in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2024, as well as its top 250 overall university ranking in THE World University Rankings 2024.
