Swinburne will launch a new course in sports media in which students will have the opportunity to work closely with Swinburne’s partner, the Richmond Football Club.
Launching in semester 2, the Diploma in Screen and Media – Sports Media is a practical course that will see students graduate with skills in sports journalism, writing, commentary, media management, social media, photography, and audio and video production.
Communications lecturer and sports broadcaster Peter Marcato has been involved in the design and implementation of the course, using his rich career history as a sports broadcaster to inform the curriculum.
Mr Marcato says working closely with Richmond will give students a real-world insight into sports media and allow them to graduate with a portfolio of work that will enhance their employability.
“Students will rotate through various parts of the media team at Richmond to give them exposure to all the different elements of sports media, both within a football club environment but also with wider broadcast implications,” says Mr Marcato.
“Students will be working in small and large teams as well as individually to produce high-quality content for various outlets of the club.”
Executive Director of PAVE Operations, Mish Eastman, says Swinburne’s partnership with Richmond will give great depth and breadth to this course.
“We’re thrilled to work with our partner Richmond to deliver this hands-on and industry-engaged course,” Ms Eastman says.
“Graduating with a wealth of real-world experience and a portfolio of work will put students in good stead to work in sports media, but also in broadcasting generally.”
As well as working with Richmond to produce media content at the Swinburne Centre, students will hear from Richmond’s media experts about media relations, public relations and social media in their classes at the Hawthorn campus.
Richmond General Manager of Communications and Marketing Simon Matthews says the students’ work will be beneficial to the club as well as their future careers.
“We identified the opportunity to deliver enhanced coverage of our Richmond VFL team and at the same time provide a great educational opportunity for Swinburne students interested in sports media,” Mr Matthews says.
