Swinburne partners with Wipro to pioneer digital innovation

Translational research in the areas of health and smart cities will be the focus of Swinburne’s new Digital Innovation Centre, opened in partnership with global information technology company Wipro Limited. 

Launched at Swinburne’s Hawthorn campus by the Victorian Minister for Small Business, Innovation and Trade, the Honourable Philip Dalidakis, the Wipro-Swinburne Innovation Centre will use cognitive computing, predictive analytics and next-generation digital technology to improve the economic, social and environmental dividends for society. 

A professorial chair will be appointed and several PhD scholarships will also be offered. These will form a multi-disciplinary team at the Centre that will spearhead research. 

“The establishment of the Wipro-Swinburne Digital Innovation Centre is aligned with our Research and Innovation Strategy 2020 that aims to create economic and social impact through collaboration with industry,” Professor Aleksandar Subic, Swinburne Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Development) says. 

“Our multi-disciplinary research teams will engage actively with the Wipro global network to produce innovative digital solutions, products and services for the health and smart cities sectors. 

“We are excited to partner with Wipro on this ambitious joint venture, which is to our knowledge the first of its kind in Australia.” 

Focused on taking research out of the lab and into commercialisation, the Centre will bid for large scale projects in Australia and globally. Wipro will help take this research to market through its global network of customers.

The centre was launched at a ceremony attended by dignitaries including Professor Aleksandar Subic, Manoj Nagpaul and the Honourable Philip Dalidakis.
