My work placement was at Swinburne full-time for 12 months as a Communications Officer. The best thing about working on placement is applying learnings from my course on practical work tasks and projects.

As part of my role in the Student Communications team, I managed multiple channels that communicate content towards students. This included the weekly student newsletter, emails, digital signage and some Swinburne web content. I also liaised with many Swinburne stakeholders to help promote their content through our channels, and assisted with printed design content, like posters and banners.

Gerald completed his work placement within the Student Communications team at Swinburne University of Technology.

During my placement, I learnt many on-the-job skills such as time management, multitasking and punctuality. I also learnt how to deal with many work-related situations professionally.

I worked on tasks and projects with my team that expanded my experience and skillset, particularly in learning how to use new software and programs.

  • "Another great thing about working on a placement is experiencing what a professional workplace environment is like."

Lucky for me, my work environment and team were fantastic and supportive.

I would 100 per cent recommend the placement program to all friends at university. It may be an additional year on top of your study, but paid placements prepare you for real work challenges and can help you find out whether you enjoy working in a professional role related to your course. After I graduate, I hope to find a similar role and help an organisation build its brand.
