Overview

Engage in the vibrant energy of Kuala Lumpur and the rich Malaysian culture and industry during an immersive six-week internship in the country's modern capital. This program allows you to explore the dynamic cityscape but also to put your skills into practice in a real-world professional setting.

The internship experience will contribute to one of the following Law units:

  • LAW10016 Professional Experience in Law 1
  • LAW20018 Professional Experience in Law 2
  • LAW30016 Professional Experience in Law 3
     

Criminal Justice and Criminology students

  • SOC20021 International Internship – Humanities (Extended)
     

Other students

  • International Internship (Extended) 25CP unit in your area of study

Important note: These study areas are just a guide, and availability of relevant internships depends on many individual factors. Sourcing internships for some study areas and majors may be more challenging than others. If your study area is not listed here, but you are interested in this destination, please let us know and we can confirm with the internship provider.

Note for postgraduate students: Unfortunately, internships are not available for postgraduate students unless they have course-specific project unit on the study plan that can be used for internship experience, given the niche and specific nature of courses and study areas. Postgraduate students should inquire with Swinburne Abroad's Overseas Internships Advisor before applying for a program to confirm availability.

Eligibility

Specific eligibility requirements depend on the academic unit being utilised, but all students must meet the minimum program eligibility criteria:

Undergraduate

  • Completing an undergraduate course in study areas listed above, a Bachelor of Law or a Bachelor of Business course
  • Completed at least 100CP (8 units) or 150 CP (12 units) if you intend to use the international internship unit
  • Have an average weighted mark of at least 60% (or satisfy additional eligibility criteria if mark is between 50-60%)
  • Have available space in your course for the applicable academic unit (domestic students may be able overload their degree)
  • Law students must not have completed all 3 Law Placements

 

Postgraduate

  • Completing a postgraduate course in study areas listed above
  • Completed at least 25CP (2 units) at the time of application
  • Have an average weighted mark of at least 60% (or satisfy additional eligibility criteria if mark is between 50-60%)
  • Have a course-specific project unit on the study plan that can be used for internship experience (e.g. Education and Nursing professional placement units).

Funding your overseas journey may be easier than you think.

New Colombo Plan Mobility Grants

This program has a number of A$4,000 Australian Government New Colombo Plan grants. These grants are available to Australian undergraduate students (with no citizenship or residency rights to Malaysia), who have not previously received an NCP short-term grant.

Grants are allocated on a rolling basis and students are automatically considered for a grant as part of the application process.

OS-HELP Loan

Eligible Australian students can apply for an Australian Government OS-HELP Loan of up to A$9,504 in Asia to help cover costs associated with your overseas program.  Plus, up to $1,263 to complete Asian language study in preparation for your placement in Asia.

Application

Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis, with places (and scholarships) allocated to the first students to complete a full application and meet eligibility criteria.

Note: You can only submit an application for one overseas internship program per application cycle.
