Academic credit from overseas internships
Depending on the degree that you are studying at Swinburne you may have the opportunity to gain academic credit whilst completing your internship overseas.
Internships are always for academic credit. The type of credit you receive will depend on the degree you are studying. You will have the opportunity to select the academic unit you want to utilize for your internship program when you complete the online application.
International internship units
There are two types of international internship units available to students looking to gain credit for overseas internship experiences. The key difference between the two options being the length of your internship. Students will complete these units online whilst completing their internship. All students will be assigned an academic supervisor from Swinburne and complete reflective-style assessments throughout the internship. These units will replace elective units.
Internships with a duration of 15–25 days utilize the International Internship unit, worth 12.5CP, taking the place of 1 elective unit. Specific unit codes are as follows:

Course-specific units
Some study areas have specific project/experiential units that can be completed during your overseas internships.
Undergraduate
Media and Communications students may choose to utilise the Media and Communications Project units. Students have the option of completing either Project A, Project B or both. If students choose to complete both projects then they will be expected to complete one unit during their internship and the second during the following semester. Both projects are essentially the same unit.
MDA30006 Media and Communications Project A — core unit for the following majors:
- Creative Writing and Literature
- Professional Writing and Editing
MDA30007 Media and Communications Project B — core unit for the following major:
- Social Media
To be eligible to take these units, you must meet the Overseas Internship program eligibility requirements and gain approval from the unit convenor (completed automatically for you as part of the application process).
Postgraduate
Students in the Master of Media and Communications are required to complete the following core unit in their final semester:
- MDA80006 Media Industry Experience
This unit requires students to complete either a media project or an internship, and students can opt to complete an overseas internship. This unit is only run in Semester 2 and students must attend physical classes, so their overseas internship must be in the Winter term prior, with the unit and assessment requirements being completed after the internship in Semester 2.
To be eligible to take these units, you must meet the Overseas Internship program eligibility requirements and gain approval from the unit convenor (completed automatically for you as part of the application process).
Undergraduate
EAT20008 Professional Experience in Engineering
Most engineering students in non-Professional degrees are required to complete the 0 credit point unit ‘Professional Experience in Engineering’ which involves completing 12 weeks of engineering-related work experience.
An overseas internship can count for a portion of these weeks, the number depending on the duration of your internship.
If you are in a Professional Engineering degree that does not have this unit, OR you have already completed this unit, then you can utilise the International Internship units instead.
To be eligible to take these units, you must meet the Overseas Internship program eligibility requirements and gain approval from the unit convenor (completed automatically for you as part of the application process).
Postgraduate
EAT80003 Professional Practice in Engineering
Similar to the undergraduate unit, students in the Master of Engineering and Master of Engineering Science are required to complete the 0 credit point unit ‘Professional Practice in Engineering’ which involves completing 12 weeks of engineering-related work experience.
Same as for the undergraduate unit, an overseas internship can count for a portion of these weeks, the number depending on the duration of your internship.
To be eligible to take these units, you must meet the Overseas Internship program eligibility requirements and gain approval from the unit convenor (completed automatically for you as part of the application process).
Undergraduate Education and Nursing courses have mandatory professional placements. These placements have strict accreditation requirements, involving supervision from academic staff, so students are restricted to participating in programs run specifically for these study areas. We currently offer a Nursing Experience in Vietnam and a Global Education Practicum in Malaysia.
Eligibility requirements for these programs are set by the individual school, and is based on the placement unit you will utilise. These requirements will be advertised on the program listings.
