After two years of development, a former nightclub turned pizza place next to Glenferrie railway station has been transformed into an inviting new space for students on Swinburne’s Hawthorn campus.
Swinburne Student Life is excited to have officially launched The Junction — a 900-square-metre facility at 660A Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn, on the site previously occupied by Holy Moly nightclub.
Marketing and Communications Team Leader at Swinburne Student Life, Anthony Artusa, says The Junction is a dynamic addition to the university.
“The Junction encapsulates what is so great about the student experience at Swinburne,” Anth says.
“It will build students’ sense of belonging by providing a space where they can connect with each other and with industry.”
Dedicated spaces
The Junction boasts five distinct zones over two levels, including:
The Charging Station: The main entrance and reception lounge where students can check into the space they want to use, the Charging Station has individual workstations and café-style seating, as well as a kitchenette and vending machines.
Queer Space and Women’s Room: Dedicated spaces for LGBTQIA+ students and female students respectively, managed by the Swinburne Student Union.
Esports Lounge: A dedicated space for Esports Club members.
The Node: A meeting room, co-working, and events space for club members, the Node features a built-in projector, multi-format seating and kitchen facilities.
The Engine Room: A large co-working space open to all students, along with a bookable presentation space, meeting room and three AV-enabled co-working booths.

Clubs at the heart
“Clubs really are the heart of the Swinburne student experience,” Anth says.
“For the first time, The Junction gives them their own spaces to meet, hold industry events, fundraise, and collaborate. The Esports Club, for example, will finally have a bespoke facility to train and compete against other universities in what is a fast-growing engagement area.”
The Junction will initially be open from 9am to 5pm on weekdays (subject to change), with entry via swipe card access through the door in Shop 2 of 660A Glenferrie Road.
“We see The Junction becoming the go-to place for students to work together on projects, hold club events and spend time between classes,” Anth says.
“Work began on the space at the start of 2020 and after some unavoidable delays, it’s great to finally be opening it up to students to really make it their own.”
